C-76/08 R Commission vs. Malta
On 24 April 2008 the European Court of Justice ordered the application of interim measures at the request of the European Commission in case C-76/08. The ECJ was initially asked to determine whether the spring hunting of quails and turtle doves was in breach of Directive 79/409/EEC on the conservation of wild birds. With the order, the Maltese government was requested to ban this activity until the Court reaches its final decision.
C-503/07 Saint-Gobain Glass Deutschland vs. Commission
On 8 April 2008 the European Court of Justice rejected the appeal submitted by the German branch of French glass firm Saint-Gobain against a decision of the Court of First Instance in case T‑28/07, delivered on 11 September 2007. The CFI in this case (Fels-Werke and Others v Commission) declared the application of three German Companies inadmissible: they claimed that they would directly be affected by the Commission’s decision on Germany’s national plan for the allocation of greenhouse gas emission allowances, namely by the part which refused to grant free allowances for 12 years for new installations.

* EU and Japan pledge joint efforts against climate change
Concluding the 17th annual bilateral summit in Tokyo, the EU and Japan released a joint statement on 23 April 2008, in which they among others reaffirmed their willingness to play leading roles in addressing climate change. The parties called for an ambitious international approach including binding commitments and declared that they will co-operate in promoting this approach during the forthcoming G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit.
